Lions Gate Bridge – Under the Bridge: While I started out intending to do an abstract watercolor painting this quickly morphed into something quite realistic. It is representative of a painting which was more intentional.

Lions Gate Bridge: This painting titled Under the Bridge reminds me of my many excursions around the seawall. When I am under the bridge, I am fairly oblivious to the commanding presence and iconic beauty of this Vancouver attraction.

The water and the trees in Stanley Park are also commanding and when I am there, I am in the moment – right where I am “Under the Bridge”. This is a Vancouver attraction most people recognize. It is a neutral color palate making it a painting that fits in most decors.

There is a beauty in nature that seems to evolve even when, as an artist, I am less intentional and do not start with any clear vision of where the piece of art will go.

When I completed this series of watercolor paintings I did a slightly Gestalt approach. I randomly painted 12 backgrounds and then made some blotches of contrasting color and then came back a third time to add enough detail to give the piece some detail. It was an experiment to help me learn to paint more loosely.
